Benefits Of Variable Speed Pumps In Agricultural Irrigation

Irrigation pumps move waters from lower levels to a higher levels. From there, the water is then pumped through channels to the fields that require irrigation (lift operation) or raise to the needed pressure in order to allow it to be sprayed over the fields by pipes (sprinkling). The pressures involved vary from approximately 1 meter in normal lift operation, to 40 meters to sprinkle.

The flexibility of irrigation systems:

Irrigation systems for agriculture are usually categorized by dimensions of the field, type of crop, and/or date of maturation. In many instances, this kind of zoning could result in zones that have wildly differing flow rates, particularly when a farmer has multiple small or irregularly shaped fields. 

In the past, the solution to this issue was to determine the appropriate size of the agriculture water pump for the most extreme scenario and then to find a combination of valves to allow the pump to work in the most efficient way. It is almost always one or two zones where the pump is far too big for the task.

Water Conservation:

Water conservation variable frequency drives (VFDs) can also aid in the conservation of our planet's most precious resource. VFD's save water by running irrigation sprinklers at optimal pressure. Sprinklers that are over-pressurized are more likely to "fog" or create mist because the pressure increases and causes smaller water droplets to form in the nozzle of the sprinkler. 

The smaller droplets are more susceptible to being moved by wind and are also more likely to evaporate into the air. The water that evaporates before it reaches the ground is useless in the life of the plant.
