A Quick Overview of Plastic Recycling

Every year, more than 100 million tonnes of plastic are produced around the world. Plastic is extruded and packaged in many ways. Despite the amazing benefits of plastic, it is important to responsibly recover and recycle them. Plastic recycling refers to the process of recovering plastic waste from landfills and reprocessing them into useful and functional products. Plastic recycling is designed to reduce pollution and conserve resources.

It is amazing to note that recycling plastic uses 88% less energy than manufacturing plastics. A single plastic bottle recycling can provide a 100W bulb, with enough power to last for an hour.

Here is the list of plastics that can be recycled:

  • Polystyrene: These plastics include containers, cutlery, and foam cups for hot drinks.
  • Polypropylene – They are used as food containers, take-out containers, and ice cream containers.
  • Low-density Polyethylene – These can be used to make garbage bags and bins.
  • PVC (polyvinyl chloride) – They are used in tubing, blood bags, and pipes.
  • High-density polyethylene, (HDPE), – Nearly every shampoo container or milk bottle is made from HDPE.
  • Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET – PET is a common material used in soft-drink and water bottles.

Recycling is essential for plastic management. The effectiveness of plastic recycling has increased and so has public awareness. Recycling post-consumer plastic packaging and products will increase recycling and reduce plastic pollution.
